A powerful sense of camaraderie exists between officers, and he wanted to be seen as a full member of the brotherhood. He and Holly were fortunate to spend their first four years of active service together at one of the most desirable posts in the army, Vicenza, Italy. When time permitted, they traveled together throughout Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. But most of the time while Holly stayed busy contributing to activities on the installation like tutoring soldiers seeking their equivalency diplomas, Petraeus threw himself into the hardworking life of a lieutenant in the parachute infantry.

One of the largest posts east of the Mississippi River, it contained nearly 300,000 acres of scrub and swamp. The 24th Division was housed mostly in wooden barracks that had been scheduled to be torn down years before but were still in use because the army lacked the money to replace them. While not evident to most of the American public, the 24th, like many of its sister divisions, simply wasn’t ready for war. The army had been making strides to become a more professional and capable force since it returned from Vietnam earlier in the decade.

Importantly, Petraeus worked hard to stay on the good side of Holly’s mother, Peggy, who soon considered him to be like another son in the family. When Petraeus and Holly married on July 6, 1974, at West Point’s magnificent Cadet Chapel, a gothic masterpiece located prominently on the hillside overlooking the Plain, he chose a bride who clearly understood the lifestyle of an army family. In fact, her military pedigree far exceeded his. Two of Holly’s brothers were Vietnam War veterans. Her oldest brother had graduated from USMA just a few years before, also a star man.
