I was very lucky. It was a nice break even while recovering from that medical problem. It was my first time at the university where I ultimately got my degree, a very interesting and very beautiful but brief experience. At that time, the part of Artillery Regiment 109 I was assigned to was somewhere in Germany having returned from the front. A new unit was organized for the Afrika Korps and was being trained for African duty, and I was told to report to it after recovering. Later, in Naples, Italy, in 1942, I got the jaundice and was sent home again to recover.
