Lufthansa 60 67 INTO SERViCE INTO SERVICE New Northern Highlights The 737 seemed to be getting a reputation as a cold weather native, especially when, on the European side of the Arctic Circle, Braathens took delivery of their first two 73 7s in Decen,ber 1968 and January 1969. 28 twin jet, intended for use on routes where the 73 7 was considered too large. 28 also possessed exceptional shortand rough-field capabilities, making it a worthy successor to the En turbo-prop that it was intended to replace.
With Monarch's network neatly sandwiched in the middle it soon became clear to all three that a merger would create a more viable carrier. Approval for the merger was granted by the Civil Aeronautics Board in 1950 and the new company was named Frontier Airlines, serving routes that stretched from Montana to Mexico via seven states in the Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions. Operations began under the new name on I June 1950. A period of teady growth followed, Frontier utilizing a neet of trusty DC-3s throughout the network.
