Francis, the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans of the Immaculate Conception Province sat on the highest point of the eastern seaboard of the United States in a secluded section of the Island, Todt Hill, where today only the wealthy can afford to live. The setting of St. Francis surprised us both at the time with its idyllic, rich, green foliage, spacious grounds, well-kept lawns, a private pond for fishing or ice hockey, clay tennis courts that were easy on the feet, a baseball field that could double for flag football, woods for hiking, and, above all, complete privacy.

When passed around the table we felt the closeness the Apostles must have experienced at the Last Supper. The Bolgers then sang Christmas carols in Slovak and in English. After fifty years we still remember some of the tunes. After dinner we exchanged gifts. What a thrill because we never knew what we would get. We were never once disappointed. And we were always surprised. We usually received cuff links or clothes, which we could then wear to midnight Mass and feel like a million dollars. One Christmas Paulie gave us shaving cream and a shaver.

In fact, the bus ride took longer than the time we had to visit Mom. PORK OR LAMB CHOPS? One summer Richie worked in a kosher meat market owned by Irving Reitner and his wife. They were a sweet couple and trusted Richie enough to have him go to the bank every few days and make deposits of $500–800 dollars in cash. Every Monday morning the rabbi would come in and inspect the meats to make sure they were indeed in conformity with the Jewish laws for purification. Part of Richie’s job consisted of opening and closing the door for the rabbi, who went into the freezer and checked out everything very carefully.
