Next, look for the drawbacks, or negative points, of your property: What are the problem areas you want to change? Perhaps you’re too close to a noisy neighbor, or you can hear a dog barking incessantly down the street. Maybe you’ve bought into a new development and there are no trees left standing around your house. Or the builder placed the front walkway too close to the house. Or the first thing you see when you drive up is the garage door, not the house. Mark these drawbacks with a minus sign (“–”) on your plan.

During construction, the overgrown plantings on the upward slope were removed to reveal a massive ledge. Kirsten saw the ledge as an opportunity in disguise. Wanting to provide access to all parts of the upward-sloping backyard, she worked with a local mason to turn the ledge into an asset, carving a narrow set of steps out of stone. The steps lead to a pair of log chairs on a stone terrace at the very top of their land. Above the hewn steps, Kirsten planted blueberry bushes and an orchard set into a wildflower meadow that attracts birds and butterflies to the property.
