In Massachusetts the British military governor, General Thomas Gage, received word that the colonial militia in the village of Concord was storing a large deposit of weapons and ammunition. With as much secrecy as possible he directed Light Infantry and Grenadier units under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith and Marine Major John Pitcairn to discover this cache and to destroy it or to return it to the Boston garrison. When on April 19, 1775 the British troops crossed the Charles River and began their nighttime march to Concord, Paul Revere began his storied ride to sound the alarm to the militia at Lexington and at Concord.

However, if he left under the cloak of night the British could cross the Delaware and take Philadelphia unopposed. At the same time, even if he were on the Pennsylvania side of the river, he could not prevent the large British force from capturing Philadelphia if they chose that course of action. On the other hand, many of the forces of Cornwallis’ had recently left Princeton, where they must have left large quantities of baggage and stores. Washington could leave Trenton covertly and attack the meager force at Princeton early in the morning, capture the supplies there and march on to Morristown and more secure winter quarters.

21 The Second Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia on May 10, 1775 and directed New York to form a militia that was to be trained and armed. This militia was to be deployed in the city for protection against an invasion by the British. It was not until January 6, 1776 that the Provincial Congress authorized the formation of an artillery company. Hamilton immediately applied for a commission in this company. He obtained a certificate of proficiency from Stephen Bedlam, who was an expert artillery officer.
