After Cooper • 49 • Essential Lives Union, he went on to give nine more speeches in the Northeast. The 1860 Republican national convention took place in March in Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln and the other candidates did not attend, but their supporters turned out in full force. Lincoln wanted badly to go to the convention, but it would have been improper. Lincoln was not the frontrunner for the presidential nomination, but he was certainly a favorite. At the convention, he gained the nomination almost by accident.

The new law supported the expansion of slavery into the unsettled West. S. land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. The Kansas-Nebraska Act would allow new western states to choose whether they wanted to enter the Union as slave states or free states. The act had been introduced by Stephen A. Douglas, and there was much The Caning of Sumner debate before it became a law. In May 1856, Senator Charles Sumner of MassaLincoln was shocked by the chusetts spoke out against bloody partisan warfare decision.
